John Landis wrote this at nineteen, working as a production assistant in Yugoslavia, and spent the next twelve years being told it was too funny to be frightening and too frightening to be funny. Rick Baker's transformation sequence won the first Academy Award for Makeup, an award the Academy created largely because of it. Landis scored the film almost entirely with songs called Moon - Blue Moon, Bad Moon Rising, Moondance - and the joke still holds.
