Takashi Miike spends an hour making a gentle, almost apologetic film about a widower who stages auditions for a film that does not exist so he can meet a wife. Then it turns, and the turn is why people walked out of the Rotterdam premiere. Adapted from Ryu Murakami's novel, and the restraint of the first half is exactly what makes the second half land.
