This is the original patent drawing for the baseball catcher's mask — the steel cage that stands between a squatting catcher and a ball hurtling in at ninety miles an hour. Granted on 28 September 1971 as patent 3,608,089 to inventor Peter A. Abbatelli, the sheet details every bar, pad and strap in careful cross-section, turning a piece of protective gear into a study of thoughtful engineering.
