Joe Eszterhas sold the script for a sum reported at three million dollars and then fell out with Paul Verhoeven over the direction it took. Campaigners picketed the San Francisco shoot over the depiction of the killer, and the finished film was trimmed by well under a minute to hold an R certificate in America. Sharon Stone took the part after a long list of better-known actresses had turned it down.
