Bath rises in honeyed stone from the valley of the River Avon, a city that has drawn travellers to its waters since Roman times. Founded on the mineral springs the Romans called Aquae Sulis, it wears its history with elegant grace, inviting you to slow your pace and take the cure.
Wander past the Roman Baths, where steaming waters still fill ancient pools beneath a green patina of age. Climb to the Royal Crescent, its sweeping façade of Georgian townhouses curving above wide lawns, and cross Pulteney Bridge, lined with shops above the weir's tumbling water. Bath Abbey's fan-vaulted ceiling soars overhead, its west front carved with angels climbing ladders to heaven.
Beyond its honey-coloured terraces, Bath keeps a gentler rhythm: afternoon tea in the Pump Room, second-hand bookshops along Walcot Street.
