Along the banks of the Osum River, tiers of white Ottoman houses climb the hillside in perfect rows, their windows catching the evening light in a glow that gave Berat its name as the City of a Thousand Windows. This is a place where centuries settle quietly into stone.
Climb to the hilltop castle, Kalaja, where Byzantine walls enclose a living quarter of churches, cobbled lanes, and views across the Tomorr mountains. Wander the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, linked by the Gorica Bridge, where minarets and bell towers share the same skyline. Step inside the Onufri Museum, housed in the Church of the Dormition of St Mary, and study the icons of a master whose reds have never been fully explained.
Beyond its houses and history, Berat opens onto the wider Albanian countryside, of vineyards, orchards, and unhurried customs. Sit at a riverside taverna as the call to prayer mingles with church bells, and taste raki poured without ceremony. Evening falls, and the windows begin to glow.
