Along the banks of the River Coln, where honey-coloured stone catches the soft Cotswold light, lies Bibury. William Morris once called it the most beautiful village in England, and it lingers still as a picture of rural England untouched by hurry.
Follow the water past Arlington Row, the row of weavers' cottages whose gabled roofs and crooked walls have watched the seasons turn since the fourteenth century. Cross the little footbridges over the Coln and pause at the trout farm, where the river runs clear over gravel beds. Wander into the churchyard of St Mary's, part Saxon in its bones, and feel centuries settle quietly around you.
Beyond the village, the wider Cotswolds unfold in a patchwork of drystone walls, sheep-grazed hills, and market towns built from warm limestone.
