The Market Cross still stands at the heart of the village, a reminder of medieval trade. Cross the packhorse bridge over the By Brook, and pause at St Andrew's Church, whose faceless clock has kept silent time since the fourteenth century. Beyond the houses, earthworks of the old castle mound hint at the Norman stronghold that gave this place its name.
