Cebu, the cradle of the Philippines, rises from the Visayan Sea where history and island life meet in easy harmony. Here Ferdinand Magellan first set foot in the archipelago, and the Basilica del Santo Niño still guards the relic he left behind. The city hums with jeepneys and old stone, an invitation to wander.
Climb to Fort San Pedro, its coral walls holding centuries of trade and conquest, then walk the shaded lanes of Colon Street, said to be the oldest in the nation. Beyond the city, Kawasan Falls tumbles turquoise through the jungle of Badian, while Osmeña Peak offers a windswept view of neighbouring isles. Along Moalboal's coast, sardine shoals swirl beneath the waves.
Cebu is also a table well laid: lechon roasting golden over coals, dried danggit sizzling at dawn markets, and grilled skewers drifting through Larsian's stalls. Come January, the Sinulog festival fills the streets with drums, colour, and dancing feet. Evening falls, and the harbour lights flicker like scattered stars.
