Along England's western edge, where the River Dee bends beneath ancient walls, Chester stands as one of the country's most complete Roman and medieval survivors. Founded as the fortress of Deva, it has grown gracefully across two thousand years without losing its old bones.
Walk the full circuit of the city walls, the oldest in Britain, and look down upon the Rows, those double-decker galleries of timbered shops. Pass beneath the Eastgate Clock, said to be the most photographed timepiece outside London, and step into Chester Cathedral, its sandstone tower rising above cloisters once trodden by monks. Below lie the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, once the largest in Britain.
Beyond the old town, the Dee curves past Grosvenor Park, drawing rowers and picnickers alike. Racegoers still fill Chester Racecourse, one of the oldest in the world, each summer. Nearby, the Cheshire countryside offers dairy farms, sandstone villages, and orchards heavy with fruit.
