Disney was deep in debt after a decade of wartime shorts and package features, and this was the picture that had to work. The film was shot first in live action with actors and then animated from that footage, which the studio had never attempted at this scale. The songs came from Tin Pan Alley writers rather than staff composers, and Ilene Woods sang against herself on multiple tracks for Sing, Sweet Nightingale.
