Crete rises from the Aegean and the Libyan Sea alike, a sunbaked island where myth and mountain meet. Largest of the Greek islands, it holds the memory of the Minoans within its hills and offers something wilder than the postcard version of Greece. Here, every gorge and ruin seems to hum with story.
Wander the palace of Knossos, where the legend of the Minotaur lingers among restored frescoes and ancient stone. Hike the Samaria Gorge, its limestone walls towering above a path that winds down to the Libyan Sea. Stand in the harbour at Chania, where Venetian lighthouses and Ottoman minarets share the same waterfront, or climb toward the Lefka Ori, the White Mountains that hold snow long into spring.
