Ufotable adapted a single arc of Koyoharu Gotouge's manga, picking up directly from the end of the television series rather than standing alone, and released it in Japan in October 2020 while much of the world's cinema business was shut. It became the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history, displacing Spirited Away, and finished as the year's top earner worldwide, the first non-English-language film to manage that. Haruo Sotozaki directed both the series and the film.
