Elia Kazan filmed only the last quarter of Steinbeck's novel, on the grounds that the rest was backstory, and shot it in CinemaScope when that format was still mostly reserved for spectacle. It was James Dean's first leading role and the only one of his three released while he was alive; the Best Actor nomination that followed was the first given posthumously. Jo Van Fleet won Best Supporting Actress for what was her film debut.
