Peter Sohn built the film around his own childhood as the son of Korean parents who ran a grocery shop in the Bronx, which is where its neighbourhood politics come from. It closed Cannes out of competition, then opened to the second-weakest debut in Pixar's history, ahead of only the first Toy Story. It then refused to go away, passing 400 million dollars worldwide over the summer and finishing close to 500 million.
