Adrian Lyne's thriller grew out of Diversion, a 1980 short film written and directed by James Dearden, who expanded his own script for the feature. The first cut ended with Glenn Close's character taking her own life; test audiences rejected it, the bloodier finale was reshot, and Close argued against the change throughout. Made for $14 million, it became the highest-grossing film of 1987 worldwide and set off a decade of erotic thrillers.
