Along the southern coast of Sri Lanka, where the Indian Ocean meets centuries of trade and conquest, Galle Fort rises in coral stone and quiet defiance. Built by the Portuguese and reshaped by the Dutch, its ramparts still hold back the tide, inviting you to wander a world where East and West have long entwined.
Walk the sea wall at dusk, past the old lighthouse standing sentinel over Flag Rock, where fishermen cast lines into the surf. Step inside the Dutch Reformed Church, its floor set with weathered gravestones, or climb the clock tower for views across red-tiled roofs. Lose yourself in the narrow lanes of Pedlar Street and Church Street, lined with courtyard cafés and boutique villas.
