This is the original patent drawing for a gavel — here in a clever hollow-headed form with a telescopic handle. Granted on 24 July 1956 as patent 2,755,833 to inventor Arthur J. Quayle, the sheet lays out the head, adjustable shaft and striking block with tidy technical precision, giving this small symbol of authority its proper due.
