Julian Fellowes wrote his first produced screenplay for Robert Altman and won the Oscar for it, having been hired largely because he knew how such a household actually ran; a retired butler, Arthur Inch, advised on the rest. Altman wired every actor for radio sound so the overlapping dialogue could be recorded live and balanced afterwards, and kept two cameras moving almost continuously. Fellowes took the same world and the same research into Downton Abbey eight years later.
