The title began as a joke and stuck, and the film decided early that explaining itself was not required. Steve Pink directed, John Cusack produced as well as starred, and Chevy Chase appears as a repairman who declines to say how any of the mechanism works. Crispin Glover's running gag about a bellhop's arm is the most carefully constructed thing in it, and he plays it entirely straight.
