Where the Adriatic slips into a fjord-like bay and mountains rise sheer from the water, Kotor waits behind its ancient walls. Ships have anchored beneath these limestone cliffs since Venetian galleys ruled these waters. Here, past and present settle into an easy, unhurried rhythm.
Wander through Stari Grad, where marble streets wind past Romanesque churches and shaded squares open unexpectedly before you. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon rises with twin bell towers over rooftops of weathered terracotta. Climb the fortifications that snake up Mount Lovćen, past the Church of Our Lady of Remedy, until the Bay of Kotor spreads below in silver light.
Beyond the walls, Montenegro offers its wider self: the fishing villages of Perast just along the coast, the scent of grilled fish and rakija drifting from harbourside tavernas. Local markets sell honey, cheese, and dried figs from the surrounding hills. Linger at dusk, when the bay turns to copper and the mountains fade into silhouette.
