Barry Sonnenfeld spent years developing it as a musical, with Daniel Handler writing eight drafts, before budget worries pushed him off the project in early 2003 and Brad Silberling took over. Robert Gordon rewrote the script and Handler declined a credit; the finished film compresses the first three books into one. It cost around $140 million, took over $210 million, won the Oscar for makeup, and is still admired chiefly for its cut-paper end-credit sequence.
