David F. Sandberg made a three-minute short with his wife, Lotta Losten, for an online competition, lost, and watched it go viral regardless. James Wan produced the feature, Losten reprised her part in the opening scene, and Sandberg shot it in Los Angeles over the summer of 2015 having never worked on a film set before. Most of the ghost is split screen rather than digital effects, and the $4.9 million production took close to $149 million worldwide.
