On Tenerife's western coast, where the island runs out of land and drops straight into the Atlantic, Los Gigantes takes its name from the sheer cliffs that guard the shore. These dark volcanic walls rise hundreds of metres from the sea, and they set the tone for a place shaped entirely by fire and water.
Take a boat out from the harbour and watch the cliff face grow overhead, streaked with mineral colour and hung with nesting seabirds. Beyond them, the water darkens into some of the deepest coastal seas in Europe, home to pilot whales and dolphins. Along the promenade, black sand beaches meet calm, volcanic rock pools, while inland the road climbs towards Masca, a village clinging to a ravine in the Teno mountains.
Beyond the cliffs, this stretch of Tenerife reveals a quieter island rhythm: fishing boats returning at dusk, terraces serving fresh cherne, and the silhouette of La Gomera visible across the strait. Evenings settle slowly here, the sky turning gold behind the giants.
