A city is losing its children, and the police response is so heavy-handed that the criminal underworld — unable to work — organises its own manhunt. Lang's first sound film uses silence as much as noise, and Peter Lorre, twenty-six and largely unknown, gives the killer a final speech that refuses to let the audience settle. Lang called it his best film and spent the rest of his life being asked about it.
