Mallorca rises from the Mediterranean like a promise kept, its coastline of hidden coves and its interior of sunburnt hills drawing travellers back season after season. The largest of the Balearic Islands, it wears many faces: a playground of beaches by day, a hushed refuge of stone villages by dusk.
Wander the old quarter of Palma, where the Gothic spires of La Seu cathedral rise above the harbour, and the narrow lanes of Sa Calatrava hum with quiet life. Drive the twisting roads of the Serra de Tramuntana, past Deià and Valldemossa, villages clinging to terraced slopes once tended for olives and citrus. Swim in the turquoise waters of Cala Mondragó or Es Trenc, where pine meets pale sand.
Beyond the coast lies another Mallorca, one of village fiestas, almond blossom in February, and slow lunches of pa amb oli and fresh sobrassada. Rail enthusiasts still ride the old wooden train from Palma to Sóller, rattling through tunnels carved a century ago.
