Andy Muschietti's feature debut, expanded from Mamá, a very short Argentine film he made in 2008 with his sister Barbara, who co-wrote and produced this one. Guillermo del Toro came aboard as executive producer and lent his name to the marketing. Javier Botet played the title figure physically, suspended on wires with his limbs pulled at random intervals, and even the digitally enhanced shots were built on his performance; the $15 million film took around $148 million.
