This is the original patent drawing for the mandolin, granted on 1 February 1898 as US 598,245 to Orville H. Gibson — the very man whose name would become legend among luthiers. The sheet studies the instrument from every angle, its arched body, delicate soundholes and taut strings mapped with a craftsman's loving care.
