William Goldman adapted his own novel for John Schlesinger and changed the ending, the book's version having been judged unfilmable. The dentistry sequence was trimmed after preview audiences found it hard to sit through, and what survives still does most of the work of the film's reputation. Goldman later put Laurence Olivier's remark to Dustin Hoffman about trying acting into print, and the two actors have given differing accounts of it ever since.
