Medina, the radiant city of the Prophet, holds a stillness that settles over the heart long before the eye finds its domes. Second holiest of Islamic cities, it has drawn the faithful for centuries, its very name meaning simply "the city".
Wander toward Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, where the Green Dome rises above courtyards of white marble and shade-giving umbrellas that open like petals at dawn. Beyond its gates lies Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islamic history, quiet beside the palm groves that ring the city. To the north, Mount Uhud stands watch over the plain where a pivotal battle was fought.
