John Schlesinger's first American film, adapted by Waldo Salt from James Leo Herlihy's novel, and the only X-rated film to win Best Picture, a rating quietly revised down to R two years later without a frame being altered. Dustin Hoffman's line about walking here came out of a taxi nearly clipping him mid-take, and he stayed in character. The party sequence was populated with genuine Warhol Factory regulars rather than extras.
