Gil Kenan's first feature, pitched at DreamWorks and then made at Sony from 2004, using the motion-capture approach Robert Zemeckis had just tried on The Polar Express, with Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg as executive producers. Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab wrote it with Pamela Pettler, some years before Community. It was the first feature rendered entirely with brute-force path tracing, cost $75 million, took around $142 million, and was nominated for Best Animated Feature.
