Once a royal hunting ground decreed by William the Conqueror, the New Forest spreads across Hampshire in a patchwork of heath, woodland and quiet villages. Wild ponies roam free across its open grasslands, and the low light through ancient oaks gives the place an enchanting, storybook hush.
Wander among the gnarled giants of the Knightwood Oak and the Rufus Stone, said to mark where King William II fell. Follow the trails through Bolderwood and Rhinefield, where deer move between the pines, or cycle the lanes linking Brockenhurst and Burley. At the forest's southern edge, the Beaulieu River winds past saltmarsh towards the Solent, and Lyndhurst offers a welcome pause.
Beyond the trees, the New Forest reveals a slower rhythm of life: thatched cottages, village pubs and markets selling venison and honey. In autumn, the commoners still gather their ponies in ancient drifts. Linger until dusk, when mist settles over the heath and the ponies fade quietly into the trees.
