Along the Turkish Riviera, where the Taurus Mountains tumble down to meet the Mediterranean, lies Ölüdeniz, a lagoon of impossible turquoise cradled by pine-clad slopes. Its name, meaning "dead sea", speaks of the still waters that draw the eye and calm the spirit.
Wander the pebbled shoreline of Belcekız Beach, where sunbathers gather beneath Babadağ mountain, and watch paragliders drift down from its 1,969m summit like slow-falling petals, landing softly on the sand below. Take a wooden boat across the bay to the Blue Lagoon itself, protected as a nature reserve. Beyond, the Lycian Way threads along the cliffs toward Butterfly Valley, reached only by sea or a steep mountain trail.
Nearby, the ghost village of Kayaköy stands in silence, its stone houses and chapels abandoned since the population exchange of 1923. In town, tables fill with grilled fish, mezze, and pomegranate juice. As evening falls, the lagoon turns to gold, and Ölüdeniz seems to hold its breath.
