On Cornwall's north coast, where the Camel Estuary opens to the Atlantic, Padstow sits gathered around its harbour like a fishing boat easing home. Whitewashed cottages climb the hill above the quay, and gulls wheel over masts and lobster pots, calling the tide in and out. This is a working port, and the sea's rhythm shapes every hour spent here.
Wander the quay and watch the fishing fleet unload its catch, destined for the town's renowned seafood kitchens. Follow the Camel Trail along the old railway line to Wadebridge, or cross by ferry to Rock, where the estuary widens toward the Doom Bar. Climb to St Petroc's Church, its tower keeping watch over slate rooftops and lanes.
Beyond the harbour, Padstow reveals its own calendar: the wild procession of the 'Obby 'Oss each May Day, drums and accordions echoing through the streets. Cornish pasties and crab sandwiches are eaten on the walls above the water. As dusk settles, the estuary turns to silver.
