Along the curve of West Africa, where the Atlantic rolls in warm and unhurried, Sierra Leone unfolds in green hills and golden shorelines. Its very name, given by Portuguese sailors who saw the mountains as a lion's back, hints at the drama within its borders. Here, history and nature sit close together.
Freetown rises from its natural harbour, one of the world's largest, its streets thick with the scent of spice and the sound of okada engines. Beyond the city, the beaches of the Freetown Peninsula stretch pale and quiet at River Number Two and Bureh Town. Inland, the Loma Mountains climb towards Bintumani, the highest peak in West Africa, while Tiwai Island shelters pygmy hippos and chimpanzees.
