Rising abruptly from the plains of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, Sigiriya commands the horizon like a citadel from legend. This ancient rock fortress, carved from a solitary granite outcrop, invites you to climb through centuries of history toward the sky.
Ascend past the giant lion's paws that guard the final stairway, remnants of the colossal gate that once framed the summit approach. Pause at the Mirror Wall, its polished plaster still bearing verses left by travellers long ago, and glimpse the Sigiriya damsels, frescoes whose colours have defied the ages. At the summit, the ruined palace of King Kasyapa surveys the jungle below, while the water gardens at the base reveal a masterwork of ancient engineering.
Beyond the rock, the region unfolds in green terraces and forest reserves. Nearby Dambulla's cave temples glow with gilded Buddhas, and the waters of Minneriya draw herds of wild elephants at dusk.
