Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller translate the graphic novels almost panel-for-panel into a stylised, monochrome underworld splashed with sudden bursts of colour. Across interlocking tales of brutal noir, a rogues' gallery including Mickey Rourke's hulking Marv, Bruce Willis and Clive Owen prowls the rain-black streets of Basin City. Ultra-violent, hard-boiled and visually audacious, with a Tarantino-directed sequence thrown in, it's a comic book made flesh — pulp rendered as pure graphic design.
