Along the banks of the Vardar River, where East meets West in a city rebuilt from earthquake and empire alike, Skopje unfolds as a study in contrasts. Ottoman minarets rise beside Baroque facades and new marble statues, and the result is a capital unlike any other.
Cross the Stone Bridge into the old bazaar, Stara Čaršija, where copper-smiths still hammer in narrow lanes once trodden by Ottoman traders. Climb to Skopje Fortress, or Kale, for views over rooftops and river. Stand before the bronze Warrior on Horseback in Macedonia Square, and step into the Church of Sveti Spas, its carved iconostasis hidden below street level. Pause on the old Kameni Most as the call to prayer drifts from the Mustafa Pasha Mosque nearby.
Beyond the centre, Skopje reveals its gentler side. Visit the birthplace of Mother Teresa, or climb Vodno for the Millennium Cross and a view across the valley. Linger over grilled kebapi and cold Skopsko beer as evening settles over the square.
