On the wide chalk plains of Wiltshire, where the wind carries the weight of centuries, stands Stonehenge. This circle of standing stones has watched over the Salisbury Plain since the Neolithic age, silent and unyielding, holding its purpose close.
Walk the ancient avenue toward the great sarsen stones, hauled from the Marlborough Downs some 32km distant, and the smaller bluestones, carried further still from the Preseli Hills of Wales. Trace the alignment of the Heel Stone with the rising sun at the summer solstice, and sense the astronomical knowledge etched into every angle. Nearby, the burial mounds of the Normanton Down barrows rise gently from the grass.
Beyond the stones, the surrounding landscape holds its own stories. The River Avon winds past ancient settlements, while the nearby Durrington Walls hint at a village once alive with builders.
