A widow running a failing noodle bar is taken in hand by a passing trucker who treats ramen the way a gunslinger treats a draw, and the film keeps wandering off mid-lesson into unrelated vignettes about people and food. Juzo Itami called it a ramen western and shoots the training scenes exactly that way, all deadpan discipline and sudden violence of flavour. Ken Watanabe is the sidekick, Koji Yakusho the man in the white suit who opens the film by addressing the audience in the cinema.
