Perched high above the Ionian Sea on Sicily's eastern coast, Taormina unfolds like a balcony over the Mediterranean. Founded by Greek settlers upon the slopes of Monte Tauro, this hilltop town has drawn poets, painters and wanderers for centuries, captivated by its views towards Mount Etna and the sea below.
Wander through the Corso Umberto, the pedestrian spine of town lined with baroque churches and stone houses. The Teatro Antico, a Greco-Roman amphitheatre, frames Etna's smoking summit in its stone arches. Descend to Isola Bella, its turquoise coves inviting a slower pace. Pause in the Giardini della Villa Comunale, shaded by palms and bougainvillea above the sea.
