John Huston took his cast and crew to the Belgian Congo and Uganda to shoot in Technicolor, something almost nobody had tried on location in Africa. Most of the unit fell ill from the water; Bogart and Huston claimed they escaped it by drinking only whisky. Charlie was written as a Cockney, and when Bogart would not attempt the accent the character became a Canadian instead. The role won him his only Oscar.
