Lee Marvin's Major Reisman is handed twelve soldiers facing execution or long sentences and told to turn them into a unit for a suicide raid on a château full of German officers on the eve of D-Day. Robert Aldrich shot it in England in the summer of 1966, building the interiors at MGM-British Studios in Borehamwood. It became MGM's biggest hit of 1967 and won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
