Neil Diamond plays Yussel Rabinovitch, a cantor's son in New York who secretly sings pop songs in clubs and has to choose between his father's synagogue and a music career in Los Angeles. A remake of the 1927 film that brought sound to the movies, it cast Laurence Olivier as the disapproving father. The film flopped at the box office, but its soundtrack, with Love on the Rocks, Hello Again and America, became one of Diamond's biggest-selling albums.
