On the western shore of Mull, where the Sound of Mull meets the Atlantic's restless swell, Tobermory unfolds in a row of painted houses. Fishing boats bob in the harbour below, and the hills rise green and steep behind, holding this small port town in a quiet embrace.
Walk the curve of Main Street, where ochre, pink and blue frontages catch the shifting light, each reflected in the water at high tide. Climb to the Tobermory Lighthouse at Rubha nan Gall, standing watch over the strait. Visit the old distillery, its copper stills at work since 1798, filling the air with peat and malt.
Beyond the harbour, Mull opens into wilder country, of golden eagles over Ben More and otters along the rocky shore. Sample fresh-landed scallops in a harbourside café, or a dram of the local single malt by a peat fire. In summer, the town fills with music and laughter at the Mull Traditional Music Festival. As dusk falls, the harbour lights flicker on, and Tobermory settles into its quiet, coloured glow.
