This is the original patent drawing for a typewriter, granted on 12 August 1941 as patent 2,252,652 to inventors J. L. Sweeney and Harry F. Bates. The sheet exposes the mechanism beneath the keys — the levers, typebars and carriage that turn a fingertip's tap into a crisp letter on the page — each component annotated with meticulous care.

There's a warm nostalgia in it, the ghost of ink ribbons and the satisfying ding of the carriage return, all the romance of the written word made mechanical.
