Vince Gill began writing it after the death of Keith Whitley and could not finish it until he lost his own brother — which is why every line sounds so hard-won. Released in 1995, Go Rest High on That Mountain has since been sung at more funerals than almost any song in country music. Its complete lyric is set here in one calm block of type.
