Off the western coast of Greece, where the Ionian Sea shifts through impossible shades of turquoise, Zante rises in cliffs and olive groves. Known to Greeks as Zakynthos, this island of poets and pirates wears its beauty openly, inviting you to wander at an unhurried pace.
Sail towards Navagio, where a rusted shipwreck lies stranded on a beach hemmed by towering limestone walls, accessible only by boat. Drift over the Blue Caves near Cape Skinari, where sunlight bends through the water into pools of impossible colour. Inland, the Vardanos and Gerakas beaches shelter loggerhead turtles, while the ruins of Bochali's Venetian kastro look down over Zakynthos Town.
Beyond the coastline, Zante reveals its Venetian soul, in the arcaded streets and campaniles rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake. Sample fresh mandolato, the local nougat, or a glass of Verdea wine. As evening falls, the scent of grilled octopus drifts through tavernas, and the island settles into a slow, salt-scented calm.
