Between the Alps and the plains of the Veneto, Italy's largest lake spreads out in a basin of pale limestone and cypress, where the water shifts from deep sapphire to turquoise beneath the sun. Garda invites you to slow down, to trade the clock for the rhythm of ferries crossing between shore and shore.
Wander the arcaded lanes of Sirmione, its castle rising on a narrow spit above the water, or climb through Malcesine to the medieval Scaligero fortress that watches over the eastern shore. Ride the cable car up Monte Baldo for views across the whole lake to the Dolomites beyond. In Riva del Garda, the northern wind fills the sails of windsurfers, while Salò and Gardone Riviera hold their own quiet elegance.
